“In the next 5 to 10 years most of the country will have smart luminaires” – Miguel Allen Lima to the RTP 3 TV Channel

  As technology is “increasingly cheap” and features multiply, smart cities gain “momentum”. Miguel Allen Lima feels a clear "speeding up" in this area, and even risks an estimate: 5 to 10 years will be enough for luminaires and other centrally managed smart devices "through a tablet" to become the standard in Portugal. 

A real example? The project Arquiled is implementing in Tomar, where through a radio technology [LoRa Wan] that consumes “400x less energy than a cellular phone” it is possible to establish communications with the LED luminaires that are starting to be installed in the county, thus allowing a higher efficient management - “Have lighting on all night [at full power], even if no one crosses the street, is a huge waste”. 

But there's more: "We're doing with the Internet of Things something like what already exists to the mobile network," allowing any device anywhere in the city to communicate with the network "- in the case of Tomar Municipality besides the lighting management, it will be provided information about the quality of water, flood alerts. 

Miguel Allen Lima has no doubt: this is the future, and it is knocking out the door. Municipalities can reduce costs and carbon footprint in a scenario where the investment needed “compared to 10 years ago is 10x less” (…), energy savings pay out the investment in a very short period time”.
