ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

“Natural light reveals and magnifies the landscape. Artificial lighting offers complementary staging that enables other interpretations. With its total metamorphosis of daytime scenarios, it stimulates sensations and develops our imagination.”

Roger Narboni, 2003

Roger Narboni’s quote, one of the most repute light designer of today, reflects the true dimension and importance of architectural lighting, which impact literally allows to see the world in a distinct perspective.

THE CONTEXT OF ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

Throughout the day, human beings are constantly exposed to artificial lighting in different contexts. In a learning context at school, in a work context at the office or factory, in museums, shops, sports facilities or other outdoor activities, artificial lighting, whether or not it is combined with natural light, influences and induces behaviours in unconscious or programmed ways.

Therefore, it is essential to understand the purpose and intended impact when designing each architectural lighting solution.

ARQUILED’S EXPERTISE

Arquiled is a pioneer in LED light projects and our light designers team are experts in a variety of different contexts, mastering many of the Portuguese iconic architectural lighting projects.

With numerous references in Europe, Africa and America we used our development capacity as manufacturer to implement customized solutions using innovative products (maximizing its performance) and re-creating unique environments.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LIGHT AND COLOUR

For tens of thousands of years, the human beings spent about 90% of the day exposed to natural light and totally synchronized with the solar cycle. Currently with artificial lighting, new ways of work – that predominantly occurs indoors – came to interrupt this tuning in human life, and the human being now spend just 10% of the day in outdoor environment, with the subsequent partial or total deprivation of natural light exposure.

Most modern diseases related to stress and psychological disorders, as well as the SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) associated with the winter months, are now explained as related to the disruption of the normal functioning of the circadian cycle as the human being was abruptly stricken in recent 100 years.

Recent studies in Photobiology and the Neurosciences unveiled the role of photosensitive ganglion cells of the retina ipRGC (Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells) that have the mediating role of exposure to artificial light. Since these cells extend to the hypothalamus and limbic region of the brain, it is responsible for regulating the biological clock and perform an important role in terms of cognition and mood.

The proven influence of illuminance and colour on human behaviour brings a new dimension to lighting design of inside and outside buildings, regardless of their intended purpose.

HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING

Nowadays the human dimension assumes the central role in the planning of architectural and decorative lighting in buildings, due to the impact on humans.

The dynamic control of illuminance and colour, which became a reality only with the advent of LED technology, permits to adjust the level of lighting depending on each context and colour that potentiate the well-being and human activity, in their different times throughout the day.

Thus, it is possible by LED technology and obeying the principles of lighting design centred on the human being, HCL (Human Centric Lighting), designing environments that potentiate the cognitive action in contexts of learning, human dexterity in factories or surgery rooms, promote productivity in offices, create environments conducive to convalescence or prepare the human being to the hours of nightly rest…

THE BENEFITS OF ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

Enhancing the image and security of a business

When used outdoors, architectural lighting enables us to re-create unique and distinctive images of establishments and buildings, maintaining and projecting their image beyond the daytime period and improving security while decisively contributing to the creation and maintenance of a brand and an identity.

Creating environments

The high flexibility of LED luminaires and their ability to control intensity and colour makes them the most suitable technology for creating environments and controlling their dynamics throughout the day depending on what kind of space it is, its exposure to natural light and the stimulus it is intended to have on people.

Increased productivity

Whether in a work or classroom context, artificial lighting can be combined with natural light or can replace it after sundown or when there are no windows, creating ideal lighting environments to perform tasks, with direct impact in the shape of increased concentration and reduced fatigue.

Increasing efficiency and reducing costs

The high luminous efficiency of LED technology makes it the most economical energy option. The longer it is used through the day, the greater the savings generated. This economic factor, coupled with LED’s reliability and absence of maintenance, make it the most suitable technology for lighting projects in any context it is utilized.

TESTIMONIALS

Frederico Lucas
Light Designer ARQUILED

“The great challenge in this project was centred on the conditions of the space itself – high ceilings and the industrial environment typical of a facility of this type are aspects that require special attention from the light design team when lighting the areas covered by manufacturing equipment, as well as the characteristics of luminaires that must be adapted for the adverse environment of such an industry.”
